Countyline Dragway

Enrique S. Takes the Win

08/11/07 - We had another great night out at Countyline Dragway battling it out on the 1/8th mile track. As usual there were minimal breakdowns, and Paul the Drag Strip manager, Anthony, co-owner and Pete co-owner and Announcer extraordinaire, gave us run of the track and kept the Challenge moving.

The threat of rain loomed, but we got lucky and had a bone dry evening. We welcomed 12 racers, including a couple of new folks, one driving a nice B body Impala and a fireman driving a hot Chevy Truck. Of course the Vettes made a great showing, including Rob P. Victor G (track architect and co-sponsor), Rob S., Doug M. (making the long trek down from Palm Beach, thanks buddy) and your trusty scribe Joe G. Ray R. was there with his fast T/A but he kept it all throttle for our event as usual, and Little Franks was there testing out his new tubs in his nice Daytona Sunset Orange Monte. Frank, I think you were scraping your right door handle with that left front tire wagging in the air!

Runner Up Group Winner
Enrique S. Dan Helmers and father Terry Rob Stevenson and Roger Preston

As usual your scribe went out first round, for the second event in a row to sponsor Victor Gonzalez in his super fast twin turbo Vette. Man it is scary to see that 6 second car running me down for the win every week!

Rob S.- congratulations on your win! As one of our regulars, Rob, as usual, drove his 6 speed Vette very competitively at Countyline. You've got that 6 speed Vette dialed in....but you got a dose of great luck on your first round on a double red-light. Lucky for you Countyline regular Rich W. went red first! It's usually good to be the faster guy for this very reason.

Enrique S was our runner up, leaving just a little slow off the light in the final but cutting some smoking lights in the early rounds in his bottle fed Z28 - including a .006 in round one! Nice consistent driving all night Enrique.

Your semi finalist was none other than Dan H. in his trusty Chevy truck. Dan is a regular at our events - and his Dad Terry is our tower timing manager! Nice to see Dan take home a trophy so early in our events.

I'd like to give a special thanks to Roger Preston, our co-sponsor, Steve D. and Mike C. for helping out in these events. Remember this is a grass roots operation - Steve calls in the times to Mike in the tower who makes sure the dial ins are properly entered. The ladder is prepared by none other than Roger Preston. Roger has passed along his years of track experience to make us all "experts" in track operation in no time at all.

Thanks again to our Co sponsors - Roger from Horsepower Sales - Pompano 954-782-6700 for your tireless efforts in helping run the events and Victor Gonzalez of Gonzalez and Sons Equipment for providing not only the track surface itself, but much of the special track prep that we receive for the Challenge events. Oh and to Jonathan of Horsepower Sales - Pompano... while you did a great job putting the cam in my car - I'm starting to wonder about your "clutch problems" in your beautiful black T/A. Is that car all bark and no bite? You can't show up to a track with a cammed out rumbling f-body with drag radials and not race. That's like dating Pamela Anderson and just cuddling. I'm throwing down the glove here buddy. I showed you how to fix the clutch problem. Me and you next event - round one. If you beat me, I'll be in next week for a set of heads. If I beat you... 1/2 off labor putting the heads on!!! LOL.

Note that I mentioned our little 'secret'... we receive special track prep for the Challenge events!! Victor and Paul make sure we get the best possible track surface for our events.

For anyone considering joining us, you will never find a track that treats its participants better than Countyline treats us Challenge members. We really are treated like royalty and it is such a pleasure helping these guys build the business from the ground up. We're looking to make this a big event in the future - so come join in the fun!!

Randy J. Takes the Win

07/14/07 - 13 racers came out for the festivities, including 5 Vettes, 3 F-bodies. Randy J., a former Corvette Challenge regular came out of hibernation for the first time in months to bring home the winners trophy! Way to go Randy, nice to see you again. You jumped right back on that horse buddy. The runner up was our Countyline regular Ray R. in his smoking fast black T/A. Tough to beat an automatic Vette with your 6 speed Ray but you gave it hell all night and had a great showing taking out some tough competitors. The semi finalists were none other than our own Rick M, a Corvette Challenge regular making the long trip down from Palm Beach and Rob S., one of our Countyline Regulars in his fast and reliable 6 speed 99 FRC Vette.

Michael Hansen Wins Inaugural Event

06/09/07 - The inaugural event of the Countyline Dragway Challenge Series is in the book! A GREAT time was had by all. Most importantly everyone heeded our event's motto - SAFETY FIRST. No mishaps or breakdowns, just tight racing and new friends being made.

A huge thanks goes out to Roger of Horsepower Sales - Pompano for not only sponsoring the event, but for doing yeoman's duty manually tracking the ladder for the racers. Roger, your years of drag race experience was invaluable. Did you really have a hand editing the NHRA manual?

A second thanks goes to our co-sponsor, Victor Gonzalez of Gonzales & Sons Equipment. Vic was out prepping the track at 10 am and it showed. Both lanes were running consistently and hooking well.

Congratulations go out to our event Winners!!

Your inaugural event winner was Michael Hansen in his nice Daytona Sunset Orange T/A - that car ran dead consistent all night and Michael cut some great lights in the final rounds. That !interior mod does leave a little to be desired though for your daily drive I bet! There can be only one "first event winner" ever and that's you Michael. Congratulations.

Our runner up was no less than the man Victor Gonzalez himself, beating himself at the tree with a final round red light. Too bad Vic, but your new 1000 rwhp twin turbo was running flawlessly all night, and those 6's you were putting up on the board while dialing in your new combo were impressive. Vic, what's the chances of you and I both going red in round 2 against each other with .457's. Fortunately for you, I went red first!

Our semi-final winner, Steve Davis went out with a .499 red light against Hansen in the semi final round. Tough luck Steve! But great job mowing down the field to get to that point. You have become quite the bracket racer in that 6-speed Z06. Notice that there were 2 6-speeds in the final round!

A special note goes out to Rick Mortell - sorry to call you out publicly, but you never had above .5xx all night. He's one to watch guys. Too bad you went .474 in the race against "street tires Clark". Clark, great to see you back on the track after a long hiatus - and glad you could do some pit side repairs to unexpectedly get out on the track. You owe Beatriz a big thanks for making it to the parts store and back before the first time run. That's one great thing about our new Countyline track, we're close to town for emergencies!.

Overall, with minimal promotion for our first event (we wanted to get this one under our belt to work out any kinks before we had a media blitz) we had a great turnout with 20 cars, including 8 Vettes, several beautiful T/A's, an old school Beauford (did that thing pull a wheelie?), Little Franks working his way though the rounds with his nice copper Monte, and many more. Thanks for all our Corvette Challenge at Moroso buds for showing up early and helping out. You guys are the best. And, it really was a Vette Car show before the event, there must have been 8 BEAUTIFUL Breathless C6 show cars on display next to our HP Sales dozen or so. Hey Breathless guys - I'm calling you out - let's run some of those beauties against us Horsepower Sales - Pompano race cars!! Note to those not at the event - I do this at my own peril -all of those show cars had forced induction of some kind! LOL

The only hiccups we had were:

  1. Lane access - the return lanes clogged and we couldn't get back to lanes 1 and 2 without some fancy parking lot work. But we've got a plan to fix that next time.
  2. We missed you Bob (Challenger)! See you at the next event.
  3. Bob P and I went out at noon and spent 3 hours trying to get the new ladder software to work but it'll take more time than that. We got the backup system working fine with a manual ladder. Have some respect for those folks in the tower at Moroso - there's a lot to that computer program! Redgar, we could have sure used your expertise. Need a FL vacation?
Pete the owner was quite happy with the turnout and a total of 163 racers for the night plus a ton of spectators (including my 2 y/o son Michael who came to his first Drag Race ever and enjoyed the drivers meeting riding my arm).

I for one made some new friends already and looking forward to more. Based on the results this will be some competitive, but friendly, racing. Can't wait till the next event. Pics and videos were taken and will be linked in when available.
